About

Hey, how goes it?

I am publicFunction, a web developer who spends most of his time buried in PHP/mySQL and dipping my toes into older technologies like asp (yes… asp not aspx) and now developing sites in Django.

Like a lot of people we all start somewhere, and I am no different. I started developing in 1999 whilst working as support in a Java development environment for a global banking organisation in the UK. When it was quiet I started to delve into the rather unmurky world of HTML4, soon I was creating simple static sites by the bowl full (not really a bragging point, i know).

After I while my support work moved on and I ended up being a project support analyst, still with the same company, and with the amount of remote installs and other work. I decided to see if I could start to automate some of these tasks and a colleague introduced me to perl. I spent the next year learning perl and creating install and control scripts and programs for both Windows and Unix/Linux, but mainly Windows.

Progression is, as progression does and I climbed the “Corporate Ladder” and ended up being more of a Technical Advisor and did less and less “hands-on” work, and it started to bore me. So with the webs’ technologies progressing leaps and bounds I decided to learn about one of them… No, not PHP but Coldfusion and asp (Visual Basic). I studied it for a while along with Flash Remoting (the parent of what is now Flash Builder/Flex), but after the realisation of the expense of running the Coldfusion server and the lack of connections from the Developers Edition I made the switch to PHP/mySql, with it being free and being able to service and run a working VPS server, it stuck.

This now brings us back to the start of our tale, and I am now working for a Digital Agency based in Edinburgh, but I have the joy of working from home.

Thanks for the visit.
